How to Beat the Heat at Your Summer Wedding

Summer weddings are beautiful for so many reasons — longer days, golden sunsets, mountain backdrops, outdoor receptions, and warm evenings your guests never want to leave. But while Summer weddings can feel effortless, they also come with their own unique challenges. Heat, harsh sunlight, dehydration, storms, bugs, and melting desserts can all sneak into your day if you’re not prepared.

As a Colorado wedding photography and videography team with over 25 years of experience capturing weddings in every type of weather imaginable, we’ve learned a few things that can make Summer events run more smoothly while also keeping guests comfortable and photos looking amazing.

Here are some updated and helpful Summer wedding tips for couples planning their big day!

1.) Keep Guests Hydrated From the Start

One of the best things you can do for your guests is provide hydration immediately upon arrival. Summer heat — especially in higher elevations like Colorado — can sneak up on people quickly.

Set up a welcome drink station with:

  • Infused water
  • Lemonade
  • Iced tea
  • Electrolyte drinks
  • Mocktails
  • Mini bottled waters

Not only is this thoughtful, but it also helps guests feel refreshed before the ceremony even begins.

2.) Be Strategic About Alcohol Timing

Opening the bar too early on a hot day can sometimes lead to guests becoming overheated or intoxicated before the ceremony even starts — especially if they haven’t eaten yet.

A great compromise is:

  • Offer welcome drinks or signature mocktails before the ceremony
  • Save full bar service for cocktail hour
  • Provide plenty of water throughout the day

You’ll keep the atmosphere upbeat while avoiding potential issues later in the evening.

3.) Consider a More Relaxed Dress Code

Formal black tuxedos and heavy gowns can become uncomfortable quickly during peak Summer temperatures.

Many couples are now opting for:

  • Lighter fabrics
  • Shorter bridesmaid dresses
  • Linen suits
  • Semi-formal attire
  • Dressy casual outdoor weddings

Your guests will appreciate being comfortable, and your wedding party will thank you after spending hours outside for photos and festivities.

4.) Create Wedding Bathroom Emergency Kits

This small detail makes a huge impact for guests.

Stock restrooms or baskets with:

  • Sunscreen
  • Face blotting sheets
  • Mini deodorants
  • Bug spray
  • Hair ties
  • Mints
  • Wet wipes
  • Feminine products
  • Bandaids
  • Advil or Tylenol
  • Mini water bottles

It’s one of those thoughtful touches guests always remember.

5.) Avoid Midday Outdoor Ceremonies if Possible

The harshest sunlight usually happens between 11am–3pm, which also tends to be the hottest part of the day.

For the best comfort and photos:

  • Plan ceremonies later in the afternoon or closer to sunset
  • Look for shaded ceremony locations
  • Consider tent coverage
  • Provide paper fans, parasols, or sunglasses for guests

Golden hour ceremonies not only feel cooler — they also create the most flattering and romantic lighting for photography.

6.) Prepare Flowers for the Heat

Summer heat can be tough on floral arrangements, especially delicate flowers.

A few smart ideas:

  • Order backup boutonnieres
  • Ask your florist about heat-resistant blooms
  • Keep bouquets in water whenever possible
  • Store arrangements in shaded or cool areas before the ceremony

If you plan to reuse ceremony florals at the reception, having a few replacement flowers on hand can save the day.

7.) Think About Guest Comfort During Outdoor Ceremonies

Simple upgrades can dramatically improve the guest experience.

Helpful additions include:

  • Chair covers (hot metal chairs can burn bare legs)
  • Shade tents
  • Cooling towels
  • Portable fans
  • Blankets for mountain evenings
  • Bug repellents

Comfortable guests stay longer, enjoy themselves more, and create a better overall atmosphere.

8.) Choose Heat-Friendly Foods & Desserts

Some foods simply don’t hold up well in Summer temperatures.

Try to avoid:

  • Chocolate desserts left outdoors
  • Mayo-based salads
  • Seafood sitting in the heat
  • Deviled eggs
  • Cheese-heavy dishes outdoors for long periods

Instead, consider:

  • Fresh grilled foods
  • Fruit bars
  • Gelato or ice cream carts
  • Lighter appetizers
  • Late-night snacks
  • Cold pasta salads

Summer menus can actually be some of the most creative and fun.

9.) Have a Rain Plan — Even in Summer

Summer weather can change quickly, especially in Colorado where afternoon storms are common.

Always have:

  • A covered backup ceremony option
  • Tents reserved ahead of time
  • Clear communication with vendors
  • Extra towels and umbrellas available

A solid “Plan B” helps keep stress levels low if weather suddenly changes.

10.) Sunset Photos Are Worth Scheduling Time For

One of the biggest advantages of Summer weddings is extended daylight.

Even if your timeline is packed, carving out 10–15 minutes during sunset can result in some of the most beautiful images of the entire day. Soft golden light, cooler temperatures, and a quiet moment together often become a favorite memory for couples.

As photographers, these are some of our favorite moments to capture.

11.) Don’t Forget About Your Vendors in the Heat

Your photographers, videographers, DJs, coordinators, caterers, and other vendors are working long hours outdoors too.

Simple gestures go a long way:

  • Provide water access
  • Offer shade when possible
  • Include vendor meals
  • Communicate timing changes clearly

A well-cared-for vendor team performs better and helps your day run more smoothly overall.

12.) End the Night With a Fun Summer Send-Off

Summer weddings naturally create amazing opportunities for memorable exits.

Some favorite ideas include:

  • Sparklers (where permitted)
  • Glow sticks
  • Cold spark fountains
  • Bubbles
  • Flower petals
  • LED wands
  • Vintage getaway cars

Warm Summer nights tend to keep guests energized later into the evening, making send-offs especially fun and photogenic.

Summer weddings truly are magical when planned thoughtfully. With a little preparation, your guests stay comfortable, your timeline runs smoother, and your photos and videos turn out beautifully.

Wishing all of our upcoming couples an unforgettable wedding season filled with sunshine, celebration, and amazing memories!
